Three generations of Brazilian jazz
As always, Brazilian jazz is richly represented at the festival. For example, three big names are programmed in the genre this year, each representing a different generation and style on which they have clearly stamped their mark.
Troubadour Djavan is now in his seventies but is still a trailblazer in his own country. Last year he effortlessly sold out TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. He has been interweaving his folk-like guitar songs with jazz, samba and African rhythms for decades.
For the first time, you can marvel at Marisa Monte, queen of música popular brasileira with her soulful pop songs.
Amaro Freitas, with his piano trio, had been considered a promising star for years before he broke through three years ago with the album Sankofa. His new album Y’Y is a provisional highlight of the spiritual jazz richly represented at NN North Sea Jazz this year, which is making a comeback.
